Appcelerator, Inc.: Open Source RIA, Web 2.0 and SOA-Based Services Platform

Appcelerator is an open source software company providing products and solutions for enterprise rich Internet application (RIA) and SOA-based services development. The Appcelerator Platform combines the best of RIA and SOA-based technologies and design principles into one integrated, open and standards-based platform. The result is a fundamentally new - and much faster - way to build Web-based applications with more functionality and less code.

Message Oriented Architecture

The foundation of the Appcelerator Platform is its Message Oriented Architecture. What this means is that ALL behavior in an Appcelerator application is governed by simple lightweight messages. HTML elements can send and receive messages to dynamically change the user interface or to request data from an Appcelerator Service. Appcelerator Services are responsible for processing message-driven service requests from either Appcelerator RIAs or third-party REST-enabled clients.

AJAX and DHTML without Javascript

Appcelerator RIAs are developed with standard HTML elements that include simple expressions that unleash the power of Ajax and DHTML - no Javascript required. You can also leverage our Widget Library to quickly assemble the most common components for building RIAs. On average, the Appcelerator Platform enables you to develop RIAs with up to 70 percent less code than would be required to build the same application using native Javascript.

SOA-based services in ANY language

Create services in Java, Ruby, PHP, or .NET. Appcelerator services can be accessed by any Appcelerator RIA or any third-party REST-enabled client without changing a single line of code. The Appcelerator Platform provides a clean separation between client and server. This separation allows you to create services that contain NO presentation logic - all Appcelerator services are client agnostic.

Universal Clients

Appcelerator RIAs can access Appcelerator Services written in ANY language without changing a single line of code. Appcelerator RIAs also run in all modern web browsers - including IE, Firefox, Safari, and Opera.

Rapid Prototypes - No Throwaway Code

Since the Appcelerator Platform is message-based, you can create fully-functional RIAs without writing a single line of server code. This enables you to rapidly prototype new products and services and then use your prototype in the final product with 100% reusability (no throwaway code). Additionally, your Appcelerator Prototype will include the Messaging Interface required by your RIA, so service development will be a piece of cake.

Platform Extensibility

Appcelerator is a platform, which means you can extend it to meet your specific needs. You can easily create your own Appcelerator Widgets and even extend our Client Expression Language. If you want to write services in a programming language that we don't support, you can also extend Appcelerator to support your programming language of choice.

Professional Support from the Experts

The Appcelerator Platform is not only backed by an open source community development model but a professional support model from Appcelerator, Inc.. If you need professional support, training, commercial-friendly licensing or expert consulting, we're here to help. Please contact us for more details.

Mozilla Prism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prism, previously known as WebRunner is a product in development which integrates web applications with the desktop, allowing web applications to be launched from the desktop and configured independently of the default web browser. It is commonly used with Google AJAX Applications, such as Gmail, Google Docs etc.

The preview announcement of Prism was made in October 2007[1].

Currently, a public beta is available for download online officially from the project wiki. It is compatible with Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Windows Presentation Foundation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Windows Presentation Foundation (or WPF), formerly code-named Avalon, is the graphical subsystem feature of the .NET Framework 3.0 (formerly called WinFX)[1] and is directly related to XAML.[2] It is pre-installed in Windows Vista,[3] the latest version of the Microsoft Windows operating system. WPF is also available for installation on Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003. It provides a consistent programming model for building applications and provides a clear separation between the UI and the business logic. A WPF application can be deployed on the desktop or hosted in a web browser. It also enables rich control, design, and development of the visual aspects of Windows programs. It aims to unify a host of application services: user interface, 2D and 3D drawing, fixed and adaptive documents, advanced typography, vector graphics, raster graphics, animation, data binding, audio and video. Although WinForms will continue to be widely used, WPF is now the preferred choice for developing line of business applications, especially since the release of the .NET Framework 3.5, Visual Studio 2008, and Expression Blend[4].

Microsoft Silverlight - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Microsoft® Silverlight™ is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of .NET based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web. Silverlight offers a flexible programming model that supports AJAX, VB, C#, Python, and Ruby, and integrates with existing Web applications. Silverlight supports fast, cost-effective delivery of high-quality video to all major browsers running on the Mac OS or Windows.

Silverlight provides a retained mode graphics system, similar to WPF and integrates multimedia, graphics, animations and interactivity into a single runtime. It is being designed to work in concert with XAML and is scriptable with JavaScript. XAML can be used for marking up the vector graphics and animations. Textual content created with Silverlight would be more searchable and indexable than that created with Flash as it is not compiled, but represented as text (XAML).

Microsoft Silverlight is a web-based subset of WPF. During development it was named WPF/E, which stood for "Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere". The Silverlight subset enables Flash-like web and mobile applications with the same code as Windows .NET applications. 3D features are not supported, but XPS and vector-based drawing are included.

Languages Support

With version 2.0, the programming logic can be written in any .NET language, including some common dynamic programming languages like Ruby and Python.

Features

Silverlight ships with a lightweight class library which features, among others, extensible controls, XML Web Services, networking components and LINQ APIs. This class library is a subset of and is considerably smaller than .NET Framework's Base Class Library. Silverlight code runs in a sandbox which prevents invoking platform APIs.[19] Silverlight 2.0 also adds support for DRM in media files.[14]

Silverlight also includes classes for data access over XML-based Web services (POX), REST and WCF Services. The networking support in Silverlight can be used by Silverlight applications to communicate over HTTP.

IDE

Microsoft has positioned Expression Blend 2.0 (effectively an interactive, WYSIWYG front-end for designing XAML-based interfaces for WPF and Silverlight) for designing the UI of Silverlight applications. Visual Studio 2008 can be used to develop and debug Silverlight applications. However, Visual Studio 2008 requires the Visual Studio Tools for Silverlight (currently an alpha release) to create Silverlight projects, and let the compiler target Silverlight CoreCLR.

JavaFX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

JavaFX is a family of products and technologies from Sun Microsystems, first announced at the JavaOne developers conference in May 2007. The JavaFX products are intended to be used to create Rich Internet applications (RIAs). Currently JavaFX consists of JavaFX Script and JavaFX Mobile (an OS for mobile devices; a complete mobile operating and application environment built around Java and Linux open source technologies.), although further JavaFX products are planned.

JavaFX is anticipated to compete on the desktop with Adobe AIR, OpenLaszlo, and Microsoft's Silverlight. It may also target Blu-Ray's interactive BD-J platform, although as yet no plans for a Blu-Ray release have been announced.

JavaFX is able to run on any platform which has the Java Runtime installed. No modifications are needed since the JavaFX interpreter generates default Java bytecode. A compiler is planned for the future that will improve performance by compiling JavaFX directly into bytecode.

JavaFX Script is a scripting language designed by Sun Microsystems, forming part of the JavaFX family of technologies on the Java Platform. JavaFX targets the Rich Internet Application domain (competing with Adobe Flex and Microsoft Silverlight), specializing in rapid development of visually rich applications for the desktop and mobile markets. JavaFX Script works with integrated development environments like Netbeans and Eclipse. JavaFX is released under the GNU General Public License, via the Sun sponsored OpenJFX project.

JavaFX Script is a highly productive scripting language that enables content developers to create rich media and content for deployment on Java environments. It can make direct calls to JavaAPIs that are on the platform.

JavaFX Script is a compiled statically typed declarative scripting language for the Java Platform providing automatic data-binding, full support for 2D graphics and standard Swing components as well as declarative animation. Because it is built on top of the Java Platform, it is easy to use any Java class in JavaFX scripts.

  • Why did you create another scripting language?

JavaFX Script is specifically designed to optimize the creative process of building rich and compelling UIs leveraging Java Swing, Java 2D and Java 3D for developers and content authors.

XForms - Wikipedia

XForms is an XML format for the specification of a data processing model for XML data and user interface(s) for the XML data, such as web forms. XForms was designed to be the next generation of HTML / XHTML forms, but is generic enough that it can also be used in a standalone manner or with presentation languages other than XHTML to describe a user interface and a set of common data manipulation tasks.

Unlike the original HTML forms, the creators of XForms have used a Model-View-Controller approach. The "model" consists of one or more XForms models describing form data, constraints upon that data, and submissions. The "view" describes what controls appear in the form, how they are grouped together, and what data they are bound to. CSS can be used to describe a form's appearance.

Software support

At the time of this writing, no widely used web browser supports XForms natively. However, various browser plugins and client-side extensions exist.

Mobile Implementations

Oracle Wireless Client has released a preview of their Wireless Client in March 2004. Despite its name, the preview contains no software that run on a mobile device. Instead, it is delivered in the form of a plug-in for Internet Explorer, hence maybe the "preview" in the name. The plug-in run XForms client-side, just like the browser would if it supported XForms natively.

More information may be found on the Orbit Frequently Asked Questions page.

OpenLaszlo - Wikipedia

OpenLaszlo is an open source platform for the development and delivery of rich Internet applications. It is released under the Open Source Initiative-certified Common Public License.

The OpenLaszlo platform consists of the LZX programming language and the OpenLaszlo Server:

OpenLaszlo is an open source platform for creating zero-install web applications with the user interface capabilities of desktop client software.

OpenLaszlo applications are written in LZX, an XML language that includes embedded JavaScript.
Unlike many Ajax applications, however, OpenLaszlo applications are portable across browsers.

OpenLaszlo programs are written in XML and JavaScript and transparently compiled to Flash and, with OpenLaszlo 4, DHTML. The OpenLaszlo APIs provide animation, layout, data binding, server communication, and declarative UI. An OpenLaszlo application can be as short as a single source file, or factored into multiple files that define reusable classes and libraries.

OpenLaszlo is "write once, run everywhere." An OpenLaszlo application developed on one machine will run on all leading Web browsers on all leading desktop operating systems.

Google Web Toolkit - Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Web_Toolkit

http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/overview.html

Google Web Toolkit (GWT) is an open source Java software development framework that allows web developers to create Ajax applications in Java. It is licensed under the Apache License version 2.0.

Using GWT, the developers can rapidly develop and debug AJAX applications in the Java language using the Java development tools of their choice. When the application is deployed, the GWT compiler translates the Java application to browser-compliant JavaScript and HTML.

A command-line utility shipped with GWT, applicationCreator, automatically generates all the files needed to start a GWT project. It can also generate Eclipse project files. Several open-source plugins are available for making GWT development easier with IDEs. E.g., GWT4NB for NetBeans, Cypal Studio for GWT for Eclipse, gwtDeveloper for JDeveloper etc.

Features

  • Dynamic and reusable UI components: programmers can use pre-designed classes to implement otherwise time-consuming dynamic behaviors, such as drag-and-drop or sophisticated visual tree structures.[4]
  • Simple RPC mechanism
  • Browser history management
  • Support for full-featured Java debugging.[3]
  • GWT handles all cross-browser issues for the developer.[3]
  • JUnit integration
  • Easy internationalization
  • The developers can mix handwritten JavaScript in the Java source code using the JavaScript Native Interface (JSNI).
  • Support for using Google APIs in GWT applications (initially, support for Google Gears)
  • Open-source
  • The developers can design and develop their application in a pure object-oriented fashion, since they're using Java (instead of JavaScript).[4] Common JavaScript errors (such as typos and type mismatches are caught at compile time.
  • JavaScript that the GWT compiler generates is quite obfuscated or very difficult to read, which provide the application with some security and protection of proprietary material.[4]
  • A number of libraries are available for GWT, by Google and third parties. These extend GWTs features.[4]

Widgets

Adobe Flex comes with many user interface widgets in different skins. Custom Ajax does not come with pre-built widgets, but many Ajax frameworks do, ranging from a couple of widgets to over 100. Some Ajax widgets are stand-alone, while others are tightly integrated into an Ajax framework, using the framework’s underlying functionality for event handling, drag-and-drop, resizing, sorting, and so on. An underlying framework makes it easier to customize or extend widgets, and to create completely new widgets. Some Ajax frameworks come with multiple skins for the widgets.

Extensibility

Now, Flex SDK has been Open Source so it also can be extended by external code contributions. Create custom component in Flex is very easy. Ajax is typically more extensible, because Ajax runs in browsers instead of a proprietary runtime. Custom widgets can also be created with Ajax and Ajax frameworks simplify this task by providing reusable functionality.

Getting Started - Flex 3 @Adobe

Getting Started - Flex 3 Getting Started - Adobe Learning Resources

Introduction

What is Adobe Flex? Like Flash, Flex creates SWF files that are rendered by Flash Player. However, Flex is primarily a developer's tool and the way you develop Flex applications is entirely different than the way you develop Flash RIAs. All Flex development is based upon a framework that provides you with reusable and extendable UI components, data retrieval services, event handling functionality and much more. You can create RIAs in a familiar code-centric environment, but you still reap the benefits of Flash applications, which include:

  • The ability to design and implement human-centered user interfaces without worrying about browser limitations.
  • A runtime environment with almost 100% deployment to all Internet users.
  • The powerful ActionScript programming language.
  • The ability to integrate rich media like streaming video and sound.

Java Web Start

http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/cn/java/j-webstart/

Java Web Start?

Rich Internet Application - Wikipedia

Rich Internet application - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rich Internet applications (RIA) are web applications that have the features and functionality of traditional desktop applications. RIAs typically transfer the processing necessary for the user interface to the web client but keep the bulk of the data (i.e., maintaining the state of the program, the data etc) back on the application server.

RIAs typically:
run in a web browser, or do not require software installation
run locally in a secure environment called a sandbox

Curl

http://baike.baidu.com/view/1365392.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curl_programming_language

Curl

Mashup (web application hybrid) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In technology, a mashup is a web application that combines data from more than one source into a single integrated tool; an example is the use of cartographic data from Google Maps to add location information to real-estate data from Craigslist, thereby creating a new and distinct web service that was not originally provided by either source.
